Bear-Resistant Products Testing Program

Products Tested Under the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee Testing Program

Ratings for Products for Use on Private Lands

NOTE:  The Living with Wildlife Foundation no longer issues a pass/fail test result for products tested through the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee Bear-Resistant Products Testing Program.  As of June 2008, we now rate products with a star rating system (see below) to provide more detailed information about the bear-resistancy of various products.  

Products rated with 3 stars have met the same requirements as products that were previously assigned a "pass" rating through this testing program.  In other words, 3-star products have met the most rigorous standard of 60 minutes of bear contact time with the test bears.  

All previous product testing results have been restated to correspond with the new rating system. 

Product Rating System

                                      *     Product remains intact and functional between 30 and 45 minutes

                        **     Product remains intact and functional between 45 and 60 minutes

                            ***     Product remains intact and functional for at least 60 minutes  

                            (the 3-star rating is equivalent to the previous "pass" rating used prior to July 2008)

Three-Star Rated Products     (Highest Rating for Products Used on Private Lands)

*  The following bear-resistant containers are also available from Colorado Correctional Industries.  These containers are considered to be bear-resistant since the same container designs were tested in both a larger size and a smaller size:

• 2 YRD REAR LOAD (WM2CDREL-BPL)
• 3 YRD FRONT LOAD (WM3CDFEL-BPL)
• 4 YRD FRONT LOAD (WM4CDFEL-BPL)
• 6 YRD FRONT LOAD (WM6CDFEL-BPL)
• 32 GAL DINGLE RESIDENTIAL (MPBPFS32C)
• 35 GAL DOUBLE RES (MPBPFD35C)
• 35 GAL SINGLE RES (MPBPSD35C)
• 95 GAL SINGLE RES (MPBPFSC)
• QUICK RELEASE MECHANISM AVAILABLE ON ALL FRONT LOAD CONTAINERS (MPBPQRS)

** must be secured to a concrete pad (in order to be bear-resistant, this container  must not be tipped over by bears)

Two-Star Rated Products     (Second Highest Rating for Products Used on Private Lands)

One-Star Rated Products     (Minimum Rating for Products Used on Private Lands)
